Studio Policies

Pets, Age And Service Animals

Pets are not permitted at the retreat, and all guests must be 18 or older.
Service animals are welcome. If you’ll be traveling with a service animal, please let us know in advance so we can ensure the residence and studio are suitable for your stay.

Clay

We use one house clay per season in the studio, and clay is included in the price of your stay if you have us fire it here at the retreat. If you choose to take your greenware home at the end of your stay, we charge $1.50 per pound for the clay you’ve used.

Use of non-house clay: although we discourage use of a foreign clay in our studio, we understand that most other studios will only fire their own clay bodies. We will entertain your request to spend the retreat using your community studio’s clay body, however you would be operating in an isolated approach to avoid contaminating our house clay. A fee of $100 will be added to your stay if we agree to accommodate this request.

Firing And Glaze Fees

Bisque firing is $0.08 per cubic inch. Bisque is fired in an electric kiln to Cone 04 following the “slow bisc” program within a Bartlett controller, or equivalent.

Glaze firing is $0.08 per cubic inch for single or double dips into the available house glazes.

Hand painted glazing using LFPR stock is $10 per piece, a flat fee for up to 3 glaze instructions. LFPR reserves the right to reject glaze requests if compatibility or complexity is deemed problematic by the resident Potter.

Raku

We include one bisque’d piece of your choice during your stay, and guarantee you’ll have at least 20 pieces to choose from that were thrown by the Potter in Residence. You’ll use LFPR glazes in stock to prepare your piece. Bisque’d raku clay can be fired if it’s a confirmed commercial raku clay and you’ve bisque’d it to Cone 04 (1845 degrees F). Commercial raku glazes can be brought and used in firings. LFPR staff will lead the firing of your piece while you learn the process and the magic of raku firing results.

Shipping

Finished pieces can be packed and shipped to you, or held here for collection. Shipping is charged at cost, based on what’s going.

WIFI

We intentionally do not have wifi. The 5G signal on the property is strong enough to stream video, and there are several businesses in town with wifi.

Deposits And Cancellation

Retreats: 50% deposit at booking, balance due 24 hours before arrival.
Creator Stays: paid in full at booking.
The cancellation policy is the same for both. See the Cancellation Policy page.

Liability Waiver

All guests must sign a liability waiver before their reservation can be confirmed. Please review the full terms on our Waiver Policy page.

Worth Packing

For the studio: a piece of your own pottery. Good for us to see your style and what you make, and we love to add to the museum.

For the grounds: field boots, walking or running shoes, a bike or kayak if you have them — the rail trail and the Erie Canal are both at the bottom of the hill. Binoculars, the birds are extraordinary. Bug spray, sunscreen, a hat.

For the evenings: a robe, a bathing suit for the outdoor shower, soak tubs and sauna, long pants and socks for cool nights, a headlamp, earbuds and a playlist, a good book, The New Yorker.

For you: any medication you need, allergy tablets, environmentally friendly soap, your own pillow. Candy. Marshmallows. Bubbles. A light, open heart, and one really funny joke — knock-knocks prohibited.

Fun ahead!
